The Illumination Foundation gives families hope each day they are in our program. They receive stable housing, health care services, mental health counseling, case management and life-saving basics such as food and clothing. Our program empowers vulnerable families with the skills to identify and overcome their diverse problems, and improve their lives. Children′s Resource Center Volunteer


The Children’s Resource Center Volunteer is reliable, encouraging and excited about making an impact in the lives of children. You will serve as a positive role model in an after- school tutoring environment. Our volunteers will directly assist the students’ with their homework as well as participate as a leader in group games and activities.
Location: Santa Ana or Stanton, CA
Time Commitment: Minimum of 1 day per week (Monday – Friday) for 3 hours (between 3 PM and 6 PM). Minimum length of time commitment is 6 months.

MSC Donation Room Volunteer - High Need

The MSC Donation Room Volunteer is reliable, encouraging and excited about making an impact in the lives of the street homeless community and families in our emergency and permanent supportive housing programs.  Our volunteers will assist clients shop free of charge for basic needs such as produce, food, clothing, shoes and more!  The volunteer will have direct client interaction and will provide them with a positive experience.
Location: Stanton, CA
Time Commitment: Minimum of 1 day per week.  The Donation Room is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 AM – 1 PM.  Minimum length of time commitment is 6 months. 

Recuperative Care Volunteer

 The Recuperative Care Volunteer is passionate about health and wellness and is looking to make a difference in the lives of homeless individuals who have recently been discharged from nearby hospitals and are recovering from various medical conditions. Our volunteers will lend a helpful hand where needed and assist patients with daily tasks on their path to a healthy recovery!
Location: Buena Park or Santa Fe Springs, CA
Time Commitment: Minimum of 10 hours per week.  This site is open 24/7.  Weekend volunteer opportunities are available although limited. Minimum length of time commitment is 6 months. 

Host an event at our Children’s Resource Center

(Santa Ana or Stanton) 35 children who are living in transition and at-risk of homelessness are served every day in an after school setting. We provide our children with an “enrichment activity” for the last hour of programming.  You are welcome to arrive with your group, usually between 4:30pm – 6pm to host an activity – this can be a game, sport, athletic activity, craft, healthy eating demo, etc.  We ask for a minimum of 30 days notice to plan.

Host a Meal Service at our Recuperative Care Center

(Santa Fe Springs)  The Illumination Foundation Recuperative Care Center is a 24-hour shelter for homeless individuals recovering from acute medical conditions.  Clients look forward to having groups host a meal service to prepare to feed ~50 adults.  We ask for the group hosting the meal service to provide the food, utensils and paperware for the event.  Meals can be hosted any day of the week, including weekends, and usually takes place between 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm but times can be flexible.  No children under the age of 16 allowed at this center.  We ask for a minimum of 30 days notice to plan.

(Stanton) The Theriault Emergency Home is a safe place to serve homeless families with children and provide critical services to help with transitioning into long-term housing.  Clients look forward to having groups host a monthly meal service to prepare to feed ~50 people.  We ask for the group hosting the meal service to provide the food, utensils and paperware for the event.  Meals can be hosted any day of the week, including weekends, and usually takes place between 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.  We ask for a minimum of 30 days notice to plan.  This site is limited to monthly services – we require a commitment of at least 6 months.

School supplies are distributed to children in need at our annual Carnival for Kids!

Halloween Costume Drive – Donations requested by Friday, October 20, 2017

New or gently used costumes for children of all ages are requested for distribution at our spooky Halloween event and at all of our surrounding sites where we serve children.

Thanksgiving Meal Kit Drive – Donations requested by Friday, November 17, 2017

Meal kits are requested with Thanksgiving friendly, non-perishable items for all of our families in our housing program.  In addition, gift cards to local grocery stores are requested so our families can purchase perishable items at their local food store.

Toy Drive – Donations requested by Friday, December 8, 2017

New toys are requested for our annual Holiday Carnival!  Each year we distribute over 1,000 toys to children in our community who may not otherwise receive a present for the holiday season.  The distribution is hosted in a toy tent where the parents are able to select the toy for their child and have the opportunity to gift the item to their child in their own way.

Hygiene Items – Donations accepted year-round

Hygiene items are distributed to our clients in our recuperative care program upon arrival to our site.  In addition, we distribute hygiene kits to our street homeless community in our outreach efforts throughout the Santa Ana River Trail and Santa Ana Civic Center.

Administration & Data Intern

 The Administration & Data Intern takes you behind the scenes of a local non-profit.  This position will work directly with the Volunteer Department in planning for volunteer events, healthcare outreach events, conducting volunteer phone orientations and entering volunteer hours into our database.  Must have a passion for our mission to break the cycle of homelessness in our community.
Location: Irvine, CA
Time Commitment: About 15 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months.  

Case Management Outreach Intern

The Outreach intern is dedicated to help and assess the needs of homeless individuals along the Santa Ana Civic Center and Riverbed.  The purpose is to connect clients with housing resources that are offered through the agency or other community programs.  The most important aspects for providing services for this population is to be patient, compassionate and dedicated to play an active role in the community.  Must have prior experience volunteering/working with the homeless population.
Location: Varies throughout Orange County – primarily Santa Ana & Stanton
Time Commitment: Minimum of 1 day per week for a minimum of 4 hours.  Minimum length of the commitment is 6 months.

Children’s Resource Center Intern

The Children’s Resource Center Intern is reliable, encouraging and excited about making an impact in the lives of children. You will serve as a positive role model in an after-school tutoring environment. Our CRC Interns will assist students with homework, in addition to planning daily enrichment activities for children ages 5-12. Because of the length of time spent with the children at the CRC, interns are expected to engage with students in the same way staff do.
Location: Santa Ana or Stanton, CA
Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 days per week (Monday – Friday) for 4 hours (between 2 and 6 PM) (8 hours per week). 3 days per week (Monday-Friday) for 4 hours each day HIGHLY PREFERRED. Minimum length of time commitment is 1 semester.

Communications & Development Intern

Help Illuminate the lives of Orange County’s most vulnerable population by serving side by side with our Communications/Development and Volunteer teams! This opportunity is great for those with strong communication skills and a passion for social media and event management. Planning non-profit events and fundraisers gives you the opportunity to learn about what takes place behind-the-scenes to make an event come together.
Location: Irvine, CA
Time Commitment: This is a part-time, unpaid position.  Office hours are Monday- Friday, with the occasional weekend or evening events.  Must be able to commit to 8-12 hours per week.  Hours are flexible.

Healthcare Program Intern

 The Healthcare Program Intern is responsible for assisting the Healthcare Program Coordinator (HPC) in healthcare programs and mobile clinic outreach efforts.  This position will gain firsthand experience in our innovative healthcare outreach efforts to the street homeless.  They will assist with Recuperative Care marketing tasks, administrative tasks and will assist the HPC with projects as needed.
Location: Irvine and Santa Ana, CA
Time Commitment: This is a part-time, unpaid position.  Office hours are Monday – Friday, with the occasional weekend or evening events.  Must be able to commit to 8-12 hours per week.  Minimum length of commitment is 1 year.  

Recuperative Care Intern

 The Recuperative Care Intern is passionate about health and wellness and is looking to make a difference in the lives of homeless individuals who have recently been discharged from nearby hospitals and are recovering from various medical conditions. Our interns will lend a helpful hand where needed and assist patients with daily tasks on their path to a healthy recovery!  Our case management intern is most likely studying Human Services and has an interest in mental health, healthcare and public policy.  Our healthcare interns are most likely studying nursing, public health, occupational therapy or physical therapy. Our case management internship is not available at this time.
Location: Buena Park, Midway City or Santa Fe Springs, CA
Time Commitment: Minimum of 10 hours per week.  This site is open 24/7.  Weekend intern opportunities are available although limited. Minimum length of time commitment is 6 months.

Wraparound Case Management Intern

Wraparound Case Management Intern – The Wraparound Case Management Intern is compassionate, and is dedicated in assessing the strengths and needs of homeless clients with proven ability to build rapport. The most important aspects of providing wraparound services are knowledge of community resources and actively following up with each interaction made while building relationships.  The intern will gain exposure to community resources and will have direct client interaction.
Location: Santa Fe Springs or Stanton, CA
Time Commitment: Minimum of 8 hours per week.  Office hours are Monday- Friday between 9 AM – 5 PM.  Minimum length of time commitment is 100 hours.
