The Greatest Impact

Ivan′s Story

When Ivan first joined our Children’s Program two years ago, our staff noticed he was facing many barriers. Ivan struggled significantly with self-control and self-regulation. He showed aggressive and oppositional behavior and even used inappropriate language on a regular basis. Aside from behavioral barriers, Ivan also struggled academically. He had been held back a year and was forced to repeat 2nd grade, which was devastating for him. As a result, he began having manic episodes. To assure his safety our staff conducted a suicide assessment.

Now two years into starting in our program, Ivan has grown tremendously. Our mental health team has collaborated with his family to better accommodate Ivan’s needs and ensure his stability. He has been receiving counseling services and been given other behavioral incentive plans. Our staff have established positive reinforcement techniques for when Ivan or any other child at our center needs redirection. One technique our staff uses is a token or sticker economy, in which the kids collect tokens or stickers for good behavior in order to earn a small prize from the student store. This technique also gives students time to correct their behavior. Aside from behavioral health services, Illumination Foundation also provides Ivan with daily tutoring, educational activities, and a safe play space throughout the week.

The combination of staff and family support, as well as the counseling, tutoring and positive reinforcement techniques have helped Ivan realize that he is responsible for his actions and that he must be respectful and safe before taking action. Ivan is better at controlling his impulses and has better relationships with his peers. He is now motivated and more engaged, not only in our center but in the classroom as well. Ivan has been awarded student of the month for most improved. Ivan remains in our Illumination Foundation Children’s Program and we will continue working beside him to ensure his progress continues.

This year’s Art of Design will benefit Illumination Foundation’s Children’s Resource Centers, which focus on breaking inter-generational homelessness. Your support at Art of Design will help local children in their efforts to break the cycle of homelessness indefinitely.

Our centers provide a safe haven for children in the neighborhood where they can thrive academically and beyond. We have two locations that provide over 100 local children with critical services year-round. Illumination Foundation provides daily meals, after school tutoring, including reading comprehension and STEM. In addition, Illumination Foundation provides counseling and behavioral health practices that reflect trauma-informed care and preventative intervention to help our kids meet developmental milestones to ensure they do not fall back into the cycle of homelessness.
